Every dog parent’s worst fear is seeing their furry baby feeling sick and weak 🥺 Dogs are masters at hiding pain, so once they show obvious discomfort, it means they’re already unwell.
Many new pet parents panic and don’t know what to do when their dogs get sick. Today I’m sharing a super practical home care guide for sick dogs, covering diet, rest, daily care and taboo rules. Save this post for emergencies ✨

1. Create a Quiet & Comfortable Rest Environment 🛏️
The top priority for sick dogs is sufficient rest! When pups are ill, their immunity drops sharply, and noise or excessive activity will delay recovery.
Prepare a warm, dry and ventilated pet bed, place it in a quiet corner of your home, away from wind and strong sunlight. Avoid disturbing them frequently, and stop all training, walking and interactive games. For puppies and senior dogs, you can add a soft blanket to keep them warm and prevent colds. Never let them sleep on cold floors, which will worsen inflammation and physical discomfort.
2. Light & Easy-to-Digest Diet Adjustment 🍲
Sick dogs always lose their appetite, and forced feeding will increase their gastrointestinal burden. The core of sick-period diet is light, low-oil and easy to digest.
Stop feeding high-fat snacks, beef jerky, greasy canned food and hard dry kibble temporarily. You can replace with boiled plain chicken breast, pumpkin porridge, soft rice and hypoallergenic wet dog food. All food must be unsalted and unseasoned!
If your dog refuses to eat for half a day, don’t panic. As long as they drink water normally, it won’t affect their physical condition. Keep fresh warm water available all day to avoid dehydration, which is the key to helping them fight inflammation.
3. Strict Daily Care & Observation 📝
Detailed observation is essential for sick dog recovery. You need to record their daily state carefully, including mental condition, defecation, urine and body temperature.
Normal dog body temperature is 38℃-39.2℃. If the temperature exceeds the standard and lasts for more than 6 hours, it means there is an infection. For dogs with diarrhea or vomiting, fast for 4-6 hours appropriately to let their stomach rest, but ensure water supply.
In addition, suspend all bathing and grooming work during illness. Bathing will catch cold and reduce immunity, greatly prolonging the recovery period. You can simply wipe their fur with a warm wet towel to keep clean.
4. Critical Sick Care Taboos ❌
Many pet parents make mistakes in daily care, leading to worse dog conditions! These taboos must be remembered:
Never feed human cold medicine, anti-inflammatory drugs or painkillers! Many common human medicines contain ingredients toxic to dogs, which may cause organ failure. Never give random supplements or high-nutrient food blindly, as sick bodies cannot absorb excess nutrition.
Do not take your dog out for a walk or contact other pets during illness, to avoid cross-infection and physical fatigue.
5. When Must You See A Vet? 🏥
Home care is only suitable for mild symptoms like slight cold, poor appetite and mild indigestion. Once your dog has continuous vomiting, bloody stool, high fever, difficulty breathing, listlessness and refusal to eat for more than 24 hours, please seek professional veterinary treatment immediately, don’t delay the best treatment time!
Final small words 💌
Dogs rely entirely on us when they are sick. Patience and careful care can help them recover faster. Every trivial detail of daily care is the best protection for their health.
Hope all furry babies stay healthy and free from illness forever 🐶💛
